About Giclee Printing

Giclee (zee-clay) -- a French word meaning "to spray ink" -- is generally a digitally scanned image printed on media using a high resolution inkjet printer.

Giclee prints are advantageous to decorators, designers and artists who find it infeasible to rescale or reproduce art work using other methods. Giclee printing facilitates reproduction to almost any size and on various media allowing customization of prints for a specific situation. Reproductions of a properly digitized image can be made with minimal effort and cost. The up-front cost of mass production is eliminated and printing is done on demand.

Modular Graphic Services

In addition to our giclee printing services, we offer a full range of digital imaging services including scanning, restoration, digital manipulation, and archiving.

Giclee Printing: We reproduce your original art work high resolution inkjet printer. Oil, acrylic, and watercolor paintings, charcoal and pastel drawings - any two dimensional art can be reproduced with stunning accuracy.

Scanning: High resolution scanning is the first step to creating quality prints. We can scan transparencies up to 10" x 8". Original art of any size can also be captured digitally.

Photo Enlargement: High resolution ink jet printing is an excellent choice for photographers who wish to create poster size enlargements from digital files or original film. The most photo realistic choice is to use Photo Display Gloss or Matte papers, but photographs take on a new personality when printed on water color or canvas media.

Note: Photo display media may not meet archival life expectancy requirements, but is stable for at least 10 years.

Lamination and Substrate Mounting: Although widely used for trade show graphics, many customers use mounting and lamination as an alternative framing or stretching.

Digital Imaging: We can prepare your film for giclee printing or photo enlargements. Images can be cleaned up and/or manipulated for desired results. Contact us with your needs.

Giclee Proofing

The proofing procedure varies tremendously depending upon the customer's needs. While one customer may be happy if a print looks good and the color is reasonable, another may want the print to exactly match the original work or transparency. Usually, one proof and subsequent color correction are all that is needed to satisfy most customers.

A digital artist may not want any proof at all if the work has never appeared as a print. On the other hand, if the artist does know how the file should look as a print, proofing may make sense since color matching is encumbered by the variance of monitor output.

The proof is archived and used as a guide for reprints. While our profiling system helps to maintain consistent output, output does vary somewhat. This is caused by a number of factors including humidity and subtle density shifts of our inks. The archived proof (as opposed to the RGB image file) is what insures consistent results.

Proofing services explained

No Proof: For a job submitted as a digital file, we will make no color corrections -- the file will be printed as is. If we have scanned an image, initial color corrections will be made as we see fit for reasonable output and the job will then be printed. The result may show some global shifting of hue, and certain colors may not match originals, however the print will look good.

In House: For a digital file we will print a proof and if we see any problems with the output, we will make subtle adjustments. For a scanned image we will make initial color corrections and print a proof. We will then make secondary color corrections which will correct global hue shifts and obvious color mismatches. We will then print your job. This service incurs additional charges.

Standard: Same as In House, except we will send the proof to you before making secondary color corrections. Once we receive the proof back from you, we will make the color corrections you have indicated and then print your job. This service incurs additional charges.
